World

The U.S.-Iran conflict escalated further this week: Iran fired missiles and drones at U.S.-linked targets in Kuwait and the UAE in retaliation for a prior U.S. strike, with at least 13 Iranian military personnel reported killed since the retaliation began. In Lebanon, the IDF says it has cleared Hezbollah's tunnel network under the Ali al-Taher ridge and claims operational control of the area, while separately releasing Lebanese civilians in a deal tied to recovering the remains of Jewish community leaders killed by Hezbollah in the 1980s. Reports point to souring Trump-Netanyahu relations as Israeli elections approach, and Chinese President Xi Jinping made his first visit to Egypt in a decade as Beijing pushes deeper Middle East influence. Separately, feminist icon and Ms. Magazine co-founder Gloria Steinem died at 92, drawing tributes worldwide.

MA Governor's Race

Tuesday's primary set the November matchup: Gov. Maura Healey ran unopposed and secured the Democratic nomination, while Republican Mike Minogue — former CEO of Abiomed before its $17 billion sale in 2022 — defeated Brian Shortsleeve with more than 75% of the GOP vote. Minogue has already put $15 million of his own money into the race and will run with New Bedford City Councilor Shawn Oliver as his lieutenant governor pick after his preferred running mates were knocked off the ballot over signature issues. At a post-primary rally, Healey signaled her general-election message will center on tying Minogue to Trump ("if you support Donald Trump... then you cannot be governor of Massachusetts"). The two campaigns have agreed to two debates this fall.

Boston Mayoral Race

No active 2026 Boston mayoral race — Michelle Wu was reelected unopposed in November 2025 and remains in office; the next mayoral election isn't until 2029. The closest mayor-adjacent news this week is Wu's involvement in Tuesday's state legislative primaries (see Boston/Local), not a mayoral contest itself.

Boston / Local

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey easily turned back a primary challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton on Tuesday — a result Trump weighed in on Wednesday, saying he was "glad Markey won" because he "couldn't stand Moulton." Mayor Wu waded into two State Senate primaries to punish senators who'd blocked her property-tax plan, with mixed results: her pick Daniel Lander is leading longtime Sen. William Brownsberger by just 20 votes (a recount is likely), while her other pick, Latoya Gayle, lost decisively to Sen. Nick Collins in his South Boston base. The Lindsay Clancy murder trial remains unresolved — jurors reported deadlock to the judge for a second time and were sent back for a sixth day of deliberations, with defense attorneys now pointing to a single holdout juror and both sides bracing for a possible mistrial (see the dedicated Lindsay Clancy Trial topic below for the latest). Boston Police's preliminary 24-hour crime journal for Sept 3 showed a relatively quiet stretch — no homicides, 16 "other larceny" reports, 5 aggravated assaults, and single incidents of robbery, burglary, and auto theft.

Mass General Brigham

The most notable MGB-linked news in the last day or two isn't a press release but a loss: Dr. Paul S. Russell, a pioneering MGH transplant surgeon and mentor to generations of physicians at Mass General, died at 101, with tributes from current MGH transplant faculty following an obituary that ran Sept 2. Beyond that, MGB's own newsroom had no new press releases dated within the last few days — the system's most recent major announcements (the U.S. News "Best Hospitals" Honor Roll rankings for MGH and Brigham and Women's, and the $100 million New Balance Foundation gift to MGH) both predate this window.

Patriots

The Patriots haven't played a regular-season game yet — their 2026 opener is set for Wednesday, Sept 9, against the Seattle Seahawks. The top story out of Foxborough this week is RB TreVeyon Henderson, who remains sidelined by the ankle injury he suffered in practice on Aug 24 and, per Thursday's (Sept 3) practice report, may not be ready to debut until Week 2. In his absence, New England is leaning on Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner on the 53-man roster, with Hassan Haskins and Lan Larison available on the practice squad. The team also named its 2026 captains this week: Kevin Byard III, Hunter Henry, Marcus Jones, Drake Maye, Morgan Moses, and Robert Spillane.

Red Sox

The Red Sox opened a four-game series at Baltimore with a 6-5 win over the Orioles on Thursday night, Sept 3, at Camden Yards, improving to 76-65 on the season (score cross-checked via MLB.com/NESN/Fox Sports). Adley Rutschman — acquired from the Orioles in an Aug 3 trade — homered twice against his former team, and Nick Sogard's two-run shot in the eighth inning proved to be the difference. Erik Miller (4-0) picked up the win and Aroldis Chapman closed it out for his 31st save, as Boston carried a six-game lead over Baltimore into Friday's second game of the series.

Celtics

Nothing new — the Celtics are fully in NBA off-season mode, no trades, signings, or roster moves in the last 24-48 hours. Coverage outlets have just kicked off annual "preview month" content ahead of the 2026-27 season, which tips off Oct 20 at home against Detroit.

Boston College Football

BC has not played a game yet this season — the Eagles open their 2026 campaign Saturday, Sept 5, at Cincinnati (Nippert Stadium, 3:30 PM ET, FOX), a betting underdog (Cincinnati opened as a 7.5-point favorite, O/U 51.5; ESPN's matchup predictor gives the Bearcats a 76.8% win probability). Head coach Bill O'Brien's team returns QB Dylan Lonergan, RB Turbo Richard, and WR Lewis Bond as its statistical leaders after a 2-10 season and a full offseason roster overhaul; Cincinnati counters with its own new starting QB. No completed-game result is available yet — check back after Saturday.

BC Men's Basketball

No new information — the ACC has still not released specific dates/times for BC's 2026-27 conference schedule (the May 28 release gave opponents only; the ACC says the full schedule comes "in September," which hasn't happened yet as of today — last year's equivalent release landed Sept 9, so a similar-timed release is plausible in the coming days). BC's own schedule page still shows only the 14 non-conference games. No new roster/recruiting news.

PGA Golf

No new developments in the last 24-48 hours. The last genuine news was the Tour Championship/FedEx Cup Playoffs concluding Aug 30 — Scottie Scheffler won at 16-under, defeating Viktor Hovland by 3 strokes for his second FedEx Cup title in three years. The Tour is now in the gap between the Playoffs and the season-opening Fortinet Championship; the Presidents Cup rosters (finalized Sept 1) remain the next notable item on the calendar, with the Cup running Sept 24-27 at Medinah.

Lindsay Clancy Trial

Deliberations remain ongoing — the jury deadlocked on Day 4 (Tue, Sept 1) and again on Day 5 (Wed, Sept 2); Judge William Sullivan delivered a Tuey-Rodriguez ("dynamite") charge on Day 6 (Thu, Sept 3) instructing jurors to keep working rather than declaring a mistrial, then sent them home to resume today, Friday, Sept 4, at 9 AM — a live, developing situation that could resolve (verdict or mistrial) as soon as today.

Fishing Charlestown · Westerly · Block Island

Striped bass remain the headline story as the calendar turns toward the fall run. Breachway Bait & Tackle's latest report (Aug 28, "Calm Before the Fall!") says the summer bass pattern is "starting to crack," with smaller schoolies now mixing in with holdover fish on the incoming tide over peanut bunker, silversides, sand eels, and shrimp in the salt ponds. Up toward Watch Hill/Fishers Island, Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24) had nice-sized stripers off the Watch Hill Reefs and the south side of Fishers Island — bigger fish than the beach pattern to the west. Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24, freshest report on file for that shop) had stripers holding at the SW/SE corners of Block Island and off Watch Hill, best on trolled tube-and-worm, live eels, and umbrella rigs.

False albacore still haven't shown up locally — Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24) confirmed albies "have not moved into the area yet," and neither Breachway (Aug 28) nor Snug Harbor (Aug 24) reported any albie catches in their latest dated reports. Bluefish are present but scattered, mixed in with the bass per Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24) and "challenging to target intentionally" there; Breachway and Snug Harbor didn't call out bluefish specifically in their latest reports. Green bonito remain the more consistent story: Breachway (Aug 28) calls bonito "one of the most exciting fish around lately," feeding on very small bait and requiring downsized lures; Watch Hill Outfitters (Aug 24) also has green bonito showing on the reefs and beaches; Snug Harbor Marina (Aug 24) had the strongest bonito read of the group around the Harbor of Refuge's East/West Wall on epoxy jigs, Current Snipers, RonZ, and Albie Snax.

Tuna, in one line: recreational boats are finding a good bluefin bite south of Block Island and Montauk per all three shops (Breachway Aug 28, Watch Hill Aug 24, Snug Harbor Aug 24) on jigs and trolled ballyhoo. Quonnie Bait & Tackle was checked again this refresh but its latest post remains an undated stub with no usable species detail — skipped again, consistent with prior refreshes.

CRM Check last 24 hrs

Four calendar events with genuine external attendees in the last 24 hours (Thursday, Sep 3): Weekly DH Call, David and Jason (MGB), Jason x James // VC + EdVisorly chat, and Cariina Board Discussion. (The "Fireside Chat with Clay Ritchey" DH all-hands invite was excluded — it's a company-wide internal DH email with 250+ attendees, not a meeting worth individually checking against HubSpot.)

Checked all external attendees against HubSpot — 8 of 9 were already on file: Casey Heller, Lauren Young, Chris Egan, and Sebastian Garcia (Weekly DH Call — the usual DH/Advent regulars), David Brown (MGB), and Matt Barron, Pedro de Almeida (both Cariina), Miguel Galvez, and Dan Clary (Tyton Partners) — all already linked, no action needed.

One new contact not found in HubSpot — from the "Jason x James // VC + EdVisorly chat" meeting:

James Norman (Black Ops VC — VC/EdVisorly chat, Sep 3)

crm_add_requests, refresh_requests, and pending restaurant enrichment were not checked this refresh (no Supabase access from this scheduled/cloud session — see standing note). Ask Claude to check these next time you're in an attended chat session.

        Breachway Capital — 3.5 hrs (38.9%)

        Mass General — 0.0 hrs (0%)

Mon–Fri window analyzed: Aug 24-28 (unchanged — today, Friday Sep 4, is only the fifth/last day of the new Aug 31-Sep 4 week, which hasn't concluded yet, so the most recently *completed* Mon-Fri window is still Aug 24-28). Re-verified against a fresh calendar pull this refresh: same 14 raw calendar items (1 canceled, 2 identical-looking Aug 25 entries counted once) and the same 9.0 hrs / 12 distinct meeting-slots as every prior refresh of this window — eighth consecutive pull with matching numbers. This was a Definitive Healthcare-heavy week (44.4%) against a lighter Breachway share (38.9%). No day was fully calendar-free this week — every weekday Aug 24-28 had at least one meeting, which runs against Jason's stated goal of protecting full open days. Two items remain flagged for Jason to confirm: the Mon 8/24 "Call Lauren Young" block (no attendee list, inferred as DH-related) counted in the DH total; and the Thu 8/27 overlap between "Jason <> Carter 1x1" and the tail of "Weekly DH Call" — still reads as a likely genuine double-book, not a duplicate entry. Next refresh (once Aug 31-Sep 4 has fully concluded, i.e. after today) should advance to that week's numbers.
